The U joint I used came with different thickness c-clips, so one could choose the right one for the yoke's groove. And yes, shim stock should be used if needed to take up play, and shimming should be symmetrical. But that's pretty well standard practice I think. BTW the stock VW joints removed did not seem at all self centering. alistair
