you won't loose much coolant at all replacing the t-stat on a 2.1 wbxr engine.

if it's got VW Blue ......might as well keep it on that if you prefer.

that 'bleeding is critical' is a myth really .. or almost. Just change the t-stat. fill coolant. feed coolant as it will take when you fire up the engine. have heater valves on while getting it going .. when it won't take any more coolant, put the cap on . button things up, go for a test drive. later when it's all cooled down and there's an air space at the top of the pressure bottle, top that up. And do that every warm up cool down cycle for 2 or 3 times.. Just top that air space after it's cooled down each cycle for a while. it'll be bled just fine after a few top ups like that. Keep license plate bottle about half full. That's all you need to do.

the plastic water distribution 'tower' hiding behind the firewall on the right side .. those like to just crumble ....especially where a heater hose going forward from clamps on to it. I've seen a few of them just crumble under the hose .. so you want to watch both of those ..the plastic t-stat housing and the coolant distributor .. and until one actually fails it's hard to make a judgment on how much life is left in each part, sometimes anyway.

if it has an automatic transmission .. the hose that goes over the bell housing ..where it gets heat and fumes coming out of the torque converter area ....those hoses get soft and fail sometimes ....so if auto trans, check that hose also.

Nice, but pricey. Then again, kinda wondering how long the original on my van will last. Worthy of a good inspection when the new t-stat arrives.

Is it possible to replace the t-stat without loosing but a small amount of coolant and having to bleed the system?

Someone asked earlier about the coolant that's in there now. It's the VW non-phosphate stuff. I don't have any leaks.
