I once had a very similar sound in my Carat. I'd just shut down in our
driveway when I heard a terrible buzzing sound coming from behind the dash,
sounded like a relay gone wild or a huge arcing short. It stopped for a few
seconds, then started again. The sound was so scary I immediately dove under
the back seat, grabbed a wrench and disconnected the battery. The sound
stopped, then a few seconds later began again, as loud as ever! I walked
around the front of the van to discover a huge dragonfly trapped behind my
grill.

Not a likely scenario for upstate NY in the winter though...
