FWIW....

A recently purchased GPS (I should have upgraded maps before using it), was worth every penny. Coordinates entered for Craggy Wash BLM took me within yards of entrance. Really useful at 11 PM.

As per another lister (Bernie) I now have reflective strips on my rear bumper. Brighter tail light bulbs are possible too. Info likely in archives.

Water cooled coolant temps usually drop on long grades coasting (colder ambient). I imagine air cooled is similar. If thermostat non op, default mode allows air circulation but engine takes longer to get up to temp. This may be harder on it over the long haul.

I've been in parts mode search lately so easy to check. California Imports has a thermostat at less $ than other vendors.

Different design though so I would suggest checking air cooled forums on this part:
