Here John, is the MSDS sheet on WD-40. It might give you some insight into what WD really is.

Mostly petroleum based. Smells good though. :-) I would think you'd have a nice oily dash afterwards? I sprayed a big amount into a cranky U-Lock I have on my motorcycle last fall, and just went out and unlocked it last week. The residual oil oozed out of the keyhole as a clear pretty thin oil, with no smell, but def. oil.
