To expand on what Dennis Haynes said, there are actually two versions of this hubcap and one will not fit on a Vanagon:

311 601 151 D - This is the first incarnation of the "flat" hubcap that went on 4 lug Beetles, Ghias and Type 3s They were also installed on the 71-79 Bus. The height on the edge is rather shallow, but OK for these wheels.

251 601 151 A - Introduced in in 1980 with the height of the hubcap edge increased to account for Joe Luther's problem as described. The front axle center stub/grease cap does stick out further than it's previous incarnation as the venerable Bus, hence the hubcap redesign.

A lot of vendors sell both styles (and most are ignorant of the differences), but VW superseded the "311" to the "251" over two decades ago. The current Hella Mexico production is the "251" style. The "311" style is generally made in either Brazil or the Far East.

As a reminder, the 71-79 Bus and 80-91 Vanagon wheels are the same and never changed. They're still sold as a "211" prefix wheel by Volkswagen in many parts of the world.

How the woman who sold Joe the earlier style of hubcap got on them the front, I'll never know. My 84 GL, when I bought it had "311" Caps in the rear and "251" Caps on the front. How's that for confusion for the person who would not know? -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" 75 914 1.8 "Nancy" Full Timing Since March 1999 oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************************** On Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 9:01 AM, Dennis Haynes <d23haynes57@hotmail.com> wrote: > You may have gotten 15" Beetle caps. > > Sent from my Windows Phone > > -----Original Message----- > From: Joe Luther > Sent: Monday, February 28, 2011 11:15 AM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: Silly question about hub caps > > > >> Excellent suggestion - I know what I'm talking about but it's totally >> possible no one else does. >> >> I have these: >> >> http://www.hubcapzone.com/hubcaps/factory/vw/61508.jpg >> >> and want to install these: >> >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VW_Type2_T3_Kombi.jpg >> >> The hub caps I got from Craigslist are supposed to be what is shown on the >> red Vanagon above but they are too shallow to clear the grease cap and the >> wrong diameter for the wheel. >> >> However, the seller was clear that the caps came off of her Vanagon.  For >> $10, I don't think she would lie to make them go away. >> >> So my question is whether there are 2 variations of Vanagon wheel and 2 >> variations of of these hub caps out there. >> >> Does this help? >> >> Joe >> >> >>   _____ >> >> From: JordanVw@aol.com [mailto:JordanVw@aol.com] >> Sent: Monday, February 28, 2011 11:02 AM >> To: jluther@alfons-haar.us; vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM >> Subject: Re: Silly question about hub caps >> >> >> send link to pics or nobody knows what your talking about >> >> >> In a message dated 2/28/11 10:57:27 AM Eastern Standard Time, >> jluther@ALFONS-HAAR.US writes: >> >> >> >> >> I finally got the Vanagon home yesterday, my was driveway cleared of ice 3 >> weeks after purchase. >> >> In the interim, I purchased some Vanagon hub caps off of Craigslist (small >> caps with the VW logo embossed in the center).  The girl was 100% clear they >> came off of a Vanagon, she owned one and these were taken off when she put >> something else on. >> >> When trying to install the caps on my front wheel as a test, there was no >> way they would fit.  The center grease cap assembly was too tall and the >> outer diameter of the cap seemed totally wrong to fit the boss on the wheel. >> I have the steel 14" wheels, (5 x 112 I assume) with the holes around the >> perimeter. >> >> The wheels on my van should be OEM, they came with a plastic wheel cover >> that is correct for my year of Vanagon according to the web.  I just prefer >> the little VW logo hub caps. >> >> I've seen photos of Vanagons with these VW logo hub caps before.
