They're the official exit point for cabin ventilation air. I was going to say that your owner's manual will tell you which way is open (forward, I'm sure), but obviously you haven't got an owner's manual.

In late models they blanked these off and added foam-filtered vents to the rear edges of the back windows. They also started fielding complaints about cabin air making unscheduled whistling exits through the sliding window seals and such, so I'm not entirely sure it was an improvement.
