Is there no possibility that you nodded off and forgot to replace the cap at last fillup and only noticed it now? The main reason I have a locking is that I regularly leave the non-locking variety at various and sunder filling stations. If I leave the ignition keys in the cap I have a real hard time forgetting the cap.
