I have a locking cap, and I did leave the cap at a gas station in West Glacier, Montana last summer.  I drove fifty miles and stopped at a wayside for lunch before I realized what I'd done.  Carrying a duplicate set of keys in the other pocket can have its downside sometimes.  Went back for it, and yup, there it was, with keys, setting on the pump.
