good point on it being easy to turn things the wrong way when upside down, so check that for sure. it's a 12mm thread bolt. and ..oddly .. VW uses a 'normal' fairly course thread for most of their 12mm thread bolts.. such as .....diesel head bolts and engine-to-bell-housing on diesel vanagons .. very common 'nice' thread. however, oddly, they use a finer 12mm thread in just a few places.. the spare tire mounting bolt is one such 'odd fine 12mm thread' bolt. And on a waterboxer vanagon .. it might be 'the only' 12mm bolt of that fine thread on the entire van. the other place I have noticed that fine 12mm thread is on 82 DV engine cradle bars .. the bolts that go through the rubber bushings on the ends of the cradle bars. on more method on stuck bolts .. though once this method is started ..there's no going back ..( works fine on stripped out 6mm allen CV joints screws ) ..is unscrew it with a pretty hefty cold chisel and stout hammer. but that's pretty desperate ....so try not to use that method on the spare tire bolt. if it was really badly rusted ...
