hi Jeff, I had the exact model van you're working on for a few years .... so I sorta 'relate' a lot.

I'm not convinced a new aftermarket gas tank is better than an original 90 one at all. .. so I think it's a fine plan.

I have installed stainless main pipes for a customer before .. but all my vans do just fine with the metal main pipes cleaned up and restored ... it's only the rear half of them that normally wears/rots in my experience.

and it's very handy to make them into two sections ...so you can work on just the rear half without having to mess with the front halves and gas tank.
