From time to time I have wondered if the PVC piping scheduled for hot water use (designation slips my mind right now, but it is a sort of yellowish color rather than the regular white PVC) would work in this application.  Of course, it would need to have strapping for good support, but so do the original pipes.   In my '91 VW Vanagon GL Campmobile I have the original plastic pipes, renovated with GoWesy end pieces, but for folks with older vans with the original steel, rust prone pipes, this might be a thought.  Lots cheaper than stainless steel pipes, and maybe better than metal for the same reasons that PVC is used in home plumbing almost universally now.
