Correction for the archives: When I said T-2 1/2 I meant T-1 3/4. When I said T-1 3/4 I meant T-1. Sigh.

Robert, the simplest thing to do is buy the incandescent bulb. The original lasted twenty years or more, and the replacement will too.

You won't have to mess with probably having to change out the dropping resistor (the bulb uses one, but I suspect it wouldn't be just right for the LED you choose; and unlike the warning lights you're going to spend a long time staring into that bulb so it mustn't be too bright). For size, any standard T2-1/2 diffused LED will fit if you take out the little blue lens. If you leave the lens in a T1-3/4 white might give better overall results but you'll still likely have to fiddle with the brightness.
