Patti, I would wager that almost all Vanagon drivers use 87 octane (anti-knock index) gas. That is what the owner's manual recommends, and that is what is mostly available as "unleaded regular" at most gas pumps in the U.S. As stated earlier, the 91 octane recommendation in the owner's book and on the vehicle sticker refers to Research Octane Method, a different measure from anti-knock index. The owner's book actually points this out.

I have never had a problem with my Vanagon when using regular grade gasoline.
