there are two separate temperature sensors.. one for the temp gauge ....and ones sends temp info the ECU. neither temp sensor knows anything about what the other one is doing. They are unrelated. On a 1.9 wbxr you can see them right next to each other by the water pump.

on a 2WD 2.1 they are in the black plastic t-stat housing ..and harder to see with a casual glance. .

You may have a more-than-usually difficult situation with your temp gauge and flashing LED and pegging temp gauge. it's fixable though. Need to dig deeper. I think the stock vanagon temp gauge is a really good temp gauge system .. ( even though that flashing LED can occasionally be a problem ) ...

are you sure you are putting in the same year , or same version, instrument cluster when you swapped in another one ? How vanagon-savvy is your tech ? Circuits like this one can be challenging for people not very used to vanagons' various indioscyncrocities.

We've pretty much given up on attempts to repair the stock coolant temp gauge & sensor system. Have swapped out the instrument cluster, replaced the sensor and walked the wire. Still pegging max high with a steady flashing light, but the thermal laser gun reveals a normal temp system. There was a posting recently on "slime" affecting the level sensor in the pressure tank, and I plan to share that with the tech. I suppose that would only affect the blincking light anyway, not the temperature reading.

The tech working on it has found a completely independent (of the stock system) aftermarket coolant temp gauge and sensor and he plans to install that over the next two days. One thing is unanswered in my mind. Does the stock sensor give temperature readings to the ECU?
