Earl gone? Oh no! I have actually had gooder luck @ my local Earl, who I thot had just moved.
Back in the 80's my wifal unit had a 75 "La Grande Bug" VW superbeetle w/ the then new clearcoat finish on a gold metalflake factory paint job. The clearcoat started to peel after a number of years, & we took it to a "real" paint shop for repairs. They said they would have to sand the clearcoat off before they could reseal/paint it, & it would cost $700 just for the sanding. We left in shock & even more years later decided that we had to do something to sell the bug. Took it to Earl, who said, no problem painting over the clearcoat! They repainted the car metalflake gold, & the factory silver wheels black, along w/ anything oversprayable & not masked off. Finally got it cleaned up & professional looking & put it up for sale. Along comes my wife's boss who wanted to buy it, & we are concerned that the paint might not last long w/ the clearcoat under the new paint. Told the boss, she still bought it, & then sold it 15 years later w/o the paint ever failing.
YMMV,
Mr. BZ-RIP Earl
