NO !!!

two reasons ...
the coil will still be firing and sparks could jump around ,
and two , it's bad for the coil to fire without it's output getting to
ground.,

so ....
remove coil wire from middle of distributor and ground it  with a jumper
wire to the engine block.

In any case have a fire extinguisher handy.

'vacuum leak' fits the symptom ...so do check for those thoroughly.
I have found up to 10 simultaneous intake leaks between throttle body and
intake ports.
