Wanted to give you a few coordinates to help with map searches.

North-East of Asheville

Carolina Hemlocks. Coin Operated hot showers, nice campground: 35.804728,-82.203398

Black Mountain Campground. In the shadows of Mt. Mitchell. Great location, but never stayed here: 35.752782,-82.221336

Follow South Toe River rd up towards Blue Ridge Parkway and you will find campsites along the sides of the gravel road. You will gain substantial elevation and privacy if you don't mind the primitive camping. Stayed here and loved it, although my kids kept dreaming about being taken away by a bear :-) 35.721726,-82.249146

Yancey County Toe River Campground. Stayed here overnight. Not quite the RV parking lot, but not quite the sweet spot if you like seclusion: 35.873577,-82.199793

Asheville KOA East: Stayed here lots of times. Nice campground, nice showers, nice folks: 35.600369,-82.3739 (pic: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b7/misterpolak/Campwallpaper1600.jpg)

Folk Art Center. A good place with parking lot and bathrooms to start a ride towards Mt. Mitchell: 35.592901,-82.480567 Craggy Gardens: Large parking area, toilets, gift shop and great views. Good stop while en-route to Mt. Mitchell: 35.700353,-82.379619 Mt. Mitchell: A must-see: 35.766781,-82.264981

South-West of Asheville.

Mt. Pisgah campground and Inn. Stayed here lots. Showers, quiet, and a hotel with a restaurant if you're tired of eating your cooking: 35.403743,-82.754345

Going south from Mt. Pisgah down BRP the views are spectacular and biking is not as demanding as around Mt. Mitchell. A great drive or ride is towards the highest elevation on the BRP at over 6000 ft.
