I haven't spent as much time in the west as I'd like but I drove to a bike show in Reno in '84 or thereabouts and found a nice little county park with camping just outside of town to the north, I think.  Slept in the back of my then-new Nissan pickup with homebuilt wooden cap and worked a booth at the show.  If the county is still there I'd be surprised if the park is not.

  Here's a link  to a couple of pics of my recent return trip from the desert SW (USA) to the Columbia Gorge, east of Portland, Or.

I came up the "Inland route" through Nevada central Oregon, with a stop to do a bike ride in Death Valley.
