hi .. makes me think of this .. the starter engages ...but it can't quite spin the engine energetically.. kinda 'pushes' but doesn't spin it on through good.

sometimes when they do that ....on the 2nd turn of the key they'll 'push on through' and spin the engine well and it'll fire up...which they should not. when that happens I start looking at battery cables, ground cable, charging voltage, battery resting voltage, and battery condition.

the times I've seen any problems with flywheel teeth ..they were fairly badly worn in the four spots that get worn ( engine compression causes the engine to stop in one of four places.. not just 'anywhere' ..so the teeth get more worn in those 4 areas )

the starter will spin, but not grab the teeth of the flywheel..or it'll make noise .. generally ..if it's 'hard cranking' that's the problem .. that usually is not from a flywheel teeth issue.

yes, do see if you can find a shop that pays very careful attention to details.. like installing the ( critically important ) positive battery terminal cover. Good luck on that. I see minor sloppiness like that all the time ....from tire stores, muffler shops, and paint/body shops, etc.

how about this one .. woman gets jump start on mercedes car with a dead battery. Tow truck driver removes positive battery terminal cover and lays it on the engine. He connects jumper cables, and they fire up the engine. Tow truck driver removes his jumper cables and leaves. I get a call in a while that the throttle is making the engine race and accelerate by itself. The part the tow truck driver didn't put back fell into the throttle linkage , jamming it open some. Coulda killed someone even.

I Hope they get your straigtened out ! scott www.turbovans.com

oh ..I take a picture of the bad flywheel teeth with my digital camera .. then I email it to the client, or I show it to them on my computer when they pick up their van. That works nicely.

Bad choice of wording. when I said the starter stalled while trying the engine, I ment it will turn pretty slowly and then the starter it self stops and I have to release the key and then turn the key back to the start position and the starter will again engage and may or may not start the car or it may stop cranking once again. I do not think it is the teeth on the ring gear because the starter does not "Free whell" like their are any teeth missing. I have never ever had any problem with the starter engaging and starting the car until the old starter went bsd. Monday, I will be calling this shop and they are just going to have to replace it again. They also broke the little trim ring on the hatch lock and didn't put the plastic cover back over the battery which caused the negitive braded batt cable to get burned slightly. Anyone know of a better VW repair shop in the Springfield, MO area?? The dealer here like many other places don't work on these ollder vehilcles any more. Chris
