This fancy clamp is the same one used on all VW bugs after about 1965.  They 
work excellent, are easily re-moved and installed, and are reusable.  They are a 
very nice improvement over the Vanagon nut.

If you can find these...I would recommend them.  Of the thousands of bugs I 
worked on, I never heard of them coming off.  Of course, if you fail to tighten 
them...then they could.

how to you figure 'more reliable' ?

there's nothing about the benz clamp nut that could be considered less than
a thousand percent reliable..

the only thing that could go wrong is the tech fails to tighten it, which a
tech could do with a vanagon crimp nut thing as well.
it's nigh perfect...the Benz front wheel brg nut.
