And it happened to me in an '84 on a long straight road in Scotland in 1991, AFAIK long before VW issued the bulletin to cover 2.1l, let alone 1.9l. However, the $$ pigtail cure - or the $2 capacitor cure - will also cover a multitude of ills in the way of noisy track on the AFM, so it can really stretch out the life of an AFM.
