RE: Swapping from 4 speed to an automatic in a Vanagon BTDT but did mine the hard way: I totaled the '85 Westy 4 speed and replaced it with a '90 Westy with automatic transmission. And never looked back. I've found it an absolute pleasure to drive for over 50,000 miles now. The only thought I've had is that I'd like to have a limited slip differential (two occasions) but that is available now if I want to spend the money for it. And I'll be the third to mention the ease of driving in traffic on those occasions that I can't avoid it. Is there any downside? Yeah, gas mileage in town with stop and go driving, about 13-14 mpg as opposed to 18-19 (and occasionally higher) on the highway. Otherwise a happy traveling camper.
