This is correct, simply adding a turbo to a 1.6 NA will kill off your perfectly good NA engine. Piston squirters and sodium filled valves are what come to mind from the dusty archives as the main differences in the turbo version of that engine.

if you have a stock 82 diesel westy , 1.6 NA .. you can't really add a turbo to that engine .. you 'could' if you got all the turbo parts .. about a dozen of them .......but those engines are quite delicate . At the minimum you should start with a 'real' 1.6 TD .. at least then you have piston oil squirters and a head made a little better .

your best bang for the buck though .. is 1.9 NA ...very nearly a 100% 'bolt-in' ...good torque.

if you have the stock DZ very low geared DZ transaxle that's stock oin 82 D. Westy's..you need to replace that with a better trans too. scott www.turbovans.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "ralph meyermann" <ralphmeyermann@GMAIL.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 4:23 PM Subject: 82westie 1.6 diesel upgrade
