I did this on my old VW Thing. The steering brakes allowed me to lock up the left or right brake, which then got the rig to "walk" through most mucky situations. Since it was a mechanical arrangement, it ended up stretching the brake cables. A hydraulic arrangement would be better. I'd rather have a true LSD setup with a locker.
