I tried that as well.
The Jetta belts don't want to retract from the angle they're mounted at in
the Vanagon (GoWesty style, with the reel sticking out along the upper wall
mount.)
If you want to mount them in the OEM position, down low, then you still have
to have the 3-bolt bracket that came with the factory set-up. I just
couldn't get it to work and finally gave up and bought the OEM Vanagon
ones.
If you read his description, he says that he should have used the Jetta
ones, but that he actually used GoWesty. They all look similar, but they're
not the same.
One excellent idea I did get from his website was using the Jetta buckle
ends:

They're attached by cable instead of fabric and are much shorter than the
original Vanagon ones. This is a major help when tightening down car seats.
