Thanks for the replies. What I was actually referring to was the paper
sheet that seemingly accompanied every car that was never designed or
intended for public consumption. Watercooleds from the US (my 84 diesel
Rabbit, for example) and Germany (92 Jetta diesel NA) typically had that in
addition to other 'public' displays of this information (in a later Rabbit,
it is a paper sticker under the carpet back by the spare tire well).
Here's an example from a Rabbit (found under the headliner in this case):

ound-under-the-headliner-of-my-84-Rabbit-L
The Jetta version was smaller, blue and white paper that resembled the old
'greenbar' we used to run through our printers back in the early 80's.
And while looking for an example of the Jetta German version to post up I
found this link from the Samba that may have answered my question.....

It appears this guy found his built sheet back in behind the ashtray
somewhere in a 1991. Guess I'll have a look when I get home, maybe someone
else will be interested enough to have a look too?? At least I know it was
green and white despite the photo links failing.

"M-codes" (build sheets)... try looking under drivers seat for stamped meal
plaque, or below fuse panel for a paper sticker.
Decoding the numbers..
lots of info on the net, I recently saw an "interactive" m code decoder, but
I can't find the link right now. I have a couple of lists on my blog, here:
