My van is a '91 camper with 2.1 waterboxer, manual. My mileage on the highway varies, driving consistently at 60 mph when conditions permit, from about 17 (high winds) to about 23 mpg (calm, back roads and 2 lane roads), with an average of almost exactly 20 on each of two quite long trips. However, in town (I don't do a lot of in town driving with the camper), in the flatlands of Oklahoma, I only get about 15 mpg. I don't think I am doing anything wrong, and the van runs well. I drive gently. But, in town I'm driving stop and go all the time, lots of idle. I think there typically is a several mpg difference between highway and town with these vehicles, but Mr. Squirrel's seems to be more than I would expect. But, I haven't driven one like his. mcneely ---- Marius Strom <marstrom@MICROSOFT.COM> wrote: > I dunno.. I average 18-20 on highways for camping trips (Westy), and I usually run around 14 or so in the city. I don't know that there's obviously something wrong. My city driving typically includes lots of hills, as I assume Mr. Squirrel's does (living in Bend). > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Robert Fisher > Sent: Monday, April 04, 2011 3:28 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: Report: gas mileage, in town, 1.9L AT > > I'm guessing you don't need somebody to tell you there's something very wrong there. > In my '87 pass van I get about the same on the hwy vs. in town; I drive close to 70 on the hwy and like an old grandmother locally . Even with my wife driving most of the in-town miles it stays around 17.
