Joe,
Awesome Friday post - this is my favorite kind of topic here (unless I need
quick tech advice :) )
Why a Vanagon? There are many reasons and before I list some of my favorites
I'll be the first to admit that many of the reasons could be covered by a
different vehicle - however I think you'd be hard pressed to find a vehicle
that did all these things well like the Vanagon and still had any soul or
uniqueness.
Our Vanagon (to be further refered to as a bus because that's what we call
it) is our everything mobile. Her most common function is my daily driver
but she does so much more.
- She is a mobile home base of sorts at our kids football tournaments and
other functions
- Although not a camper - she does have a bed (and a side tent) and we do
use her for camping several times a year
- A portable bedroom for when I've had one too many at a friends party
- The bus has hauled countless items: band gear, Furniture, building
supplies, drunks, pee-wee football players, a spinet piano, 50 years of
school band history, assisted in moving many friends to a new home, engines,
etc. etc. etc.
- It's a "tree house" on wheels
- It has allowed us to meet and become friends with some of the the best
people (this list included)
- She is fun and cool looking (some disagree but they just don't get it)
- "Easy" to work on. I'm no mechanic but I can perform more of my own
work on the bus than I could on any other vehicle I've owned.
- Comfortable ride for long trips
- and on , and on, and on
Again, could we do many of the above things with another vehicle? Sure we
could. Still, I think you're hard pressed to find another vehicle that does
all these things (and more) just as well. Maybe the most important part is
the instant built in community one becomes a part of as the owner of a
Vanagon (or any VW bus). Plus we get all of these benefits in a ride that
isn't just like everything else out there on the road - how boring would
that be?

Jeff
