I have done several of these. I've written the process up extensively in the
archives. I wish I had made a separate document but unfortunately I did not.
I have used craft foam available from a craft store before. I can describe
it further if you need to know. It works pretty well. But I know that 3M
makes a product specifically for the purpose, and that VW shops have it. If
you have trouble finding that, I will ask my local shop who sometimes stocks
it.
Before you start, get some tape or stickers so you can label the cables and
where they go. This will save you a lot of time going back together.
It isn't a difficult job, really, just kind of time consuming the first time
through.
Be careful how you take the pieces out, lay the pieces out on a table to
keep track of them and take digital pictures if you can. The blades and the
rods they are attached to can go back in more than one way, but only one way
is right.
Be prepared to chisel the main box apart if it has not ever been apart. This
is appallingly violent. If you don't have the metal clips to clip the halves
back together, you can drill the plastic tabs and use cable ties.
I'm sending you eight or nine images I have taken of the process in hope
that they help you understand the details.
