Subject:      Rustoleum for Muffler Brackets: Will it take the heat?

Hi all.

I made new exhaust mount brackets and painted them with regular Tremclad. I
used Hi Temp paint on the old brackets but rust was showing on brackets
where they meet the muffler. In part, I figured the paint might be too
porous hence my switch to regular Rustoleum. (it's sticky stuff!)

There was no warning on the label about heat. Later on it just started
bugging me that maybe with heat, this stuff might be a fire hazard.

I was curious about muffler temps and found this:

In Rustoleums online guide, "Surface Restrictions" for brush-on paint says:


Galvanized metal,

glass and some

plastics or surfaces

that exceed 200° F



Silly question, but since I coated them pretty thick with paint, am I
running the risk of having this paint light up on parts touching the
muffler? Or will it just run the risk of peeling off?
