that's exactly why the Phaeton flopped here and only sold a year or two here in the US>.

from the very beginning ..it was regarded as a very dumb move by VW .. and low sales reflect that.

I asked my rather small and modest local VW dealer if they were going to be getting any to sell.. they said 'no, since VW required them to own one as a loaner while people had their Phaetons serviced.. and they weren't about to wrap that kind of money up in a car themselves even !
