i'm on vanagon duty todary, here in Phoneix, OR .. Exit 24 on I-5 in Southern Orgeon.

sounds like bleed the cooling system or possibly thermostat. If you get overheated engine, but cool radiator .. or just mysteryous 'unbleeding' of the cooling system .. that's usually exhast gases getting into the cooling at a head or head gasket.

Near Redding one time...had a vanagon doing that .. I had to get cool water into it, bleed a little.. drive about 35 minutes until it did it again .. stop, cool down some, fill coolant, bleed a little ..go another 35 minutes and repeat, until I got to Marin County north of San Francisco .. had to stop, cool.fill, bleed about a dozen times but I got there just fine no damare. new head gaskets fixed it just fine. the thin green o-rings at the top of the barrels.. those get hard after a while....coolant can get to the metal rings at the top of the barrels..eat at those some ..or at that junction over time.. then exhaust starts seeping into the coolant in the engine . until it displaces enough of the coolant in the engine to make it overheat. It's a regular vanagon thing ..lol !

Really ..head gaskets and a nice valve job should be done about every 8 years or 80,000 miles on waterboxer engines. Scott www.turbovans.com 541 951 8151
