I just brought two WC Vanagons back to life that had been instorage for 10 years and not even turned over. Procedures to get the AC Vanagon up and running would be similar.

Other list members have givenyou pretty good advice. The one thing I would add would be to look out for the injectors. On both of my 2.1L WBX engines the injecters were locked with fuel varnish and the engine wouldn't start. I sent the injectors from all three of my vans out for servicing with this outfit:

I got good service from them on all three sets.

Check them out on line. There are other service companies but this is the one I used.
