  So whenever I fill up, I grab my crummy simple Nokia cell phone and go to
the calculator function.  Divide the trip odo reading by the number of
gallons I put in and get the mpg. (I sometimes even do the division in my
head)  I flip up that clear-ish plastic cover and write down the numbers
inside that book..along with the date and where I filled up.

  The milky plastic cover, and why did I mention that?   With the pencil, I
can write stuff on that textured surface... Temporary stuff (I should say
"Data" not stuff,  to be 2010-relevant) I get while driving...Later, after I
have used the "Note" that I wrote on the notebook cover, I can wipe it off
with a damp cloth or use the pencil erasor and "mechanically delete" it
without messing up that notebook cover.
  When a page gets full, I remove it and place it with my owners manual in
my vehicle docs file folder...a real live folder, in the glovebox of my van.

  So old school..
