This mechanic, Gary Young of Young's Old Volks Home in Bend, Oregon, knows his Vanagons. He said that he can route the cable by dropping the spare tire.

So my question, "How tough a job is the DIY approach? Save a few bucks if I do it myself, but don't want to dig into it if it's a nightmare," still stands.
