Is "sludging" synonmous to "waterleaker" knee-jerk reaction ubiquitous

amongst arm chair pundits?

Was the sporadic issue not aleviated once synthetic oil was required?

My friends with Passats see no sludge in their engines, maybe due to regular maintenace and Mobil 1 in the crank case. I know because I worked on those cars.
