No problem. I have sta-bil in my shop, I bet I wish the heck I had put some in there when I parked it, but I never thought it would end up sitting that long. It just kept getting pushed down on the priority list. Keeping a few spare fuel filters is a good idea. I have not researched dropping the tank yet but somewhere in the back of my mind is the memory of a horror thread on the list about what a PITA this is. I'll try siphoning or something first I guess. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry, that is what I meant to use..Sta-Bil. That stuff works great. I dunno, I guess you could pull the inlet from the fuel pump...I am not familiar with an AC Vanagon's set up. There might also be rust inside your tank....That could show up after you drive around a while....I'd certainly have along a spare fuel filter for a while....
Dri Gas....that is just alcohol, which we all get now without even asking for it or buying it special. Sorry for the mistake.

Good idea. This procedure makes a lot of sense. Question, how do you drain the tank, is there a drain plug on it or do you have to drop the tank to drain it, or siphon it maybe? Is Dri Gas the same thing as Sta-Bil?

That's a good idea. What do you think, just some standard motor oil squirted in each cylinder, or would something like marvel mystery oil be preferred? You comment on the fuel brought something to mind as well. If there is any fuel in the tank that did not evaporate it is at least 5 years old now. How should I deal with that I wonder?

Drain the tank as much as possible.
What I would do would be to put in about 5 gallons of new gas with an ounce of Dri Gas and some injector cleaner. I would crank it over till I knew some of the new gas and Dri Gas mix got to all the injectors and every other part of the fuel system. I'd let that sit in everything for a day or two to dissolve all the gum deposits...Then I would run it for a bit, maybe till it comes up to temperature.
Then I'd re-drain the fuel tank, clean or replace the fuel filters and re-add some fresh gas. I'd expect or watch for fuel issues for a few tanks of fuel....5yrs sitting can make problems with the old gas... I recently re-awoke a Suziki DRZ dirtbike after 5yrs...The tank was so gummed up I had to toss it...The old gas had reduced itself to a red putty that nothing would dissolve...
Dri Gas is a pretty amazing gum disolver, though it is not sold as that.
