Zach, I didn't read Scott's entire post - however I think from previous readings from him he does suggest replacing the entire length of hose from filter to the "t" in the engine compartment. This eliminates another connection and another possible place for a leak. However, if that isn't an option right now you could put a connector in there - I used a properly sized brass plumbing connector - barbed at both ends - and clamped it down with some good clamps on my old '90.
