One trick I saw, which I haven't got around to implementing, is to use old cafeteria trays as storage for those nuts and bolts that you can't be arsed to sort. The set up was a frame with dados in the sides to hold a few trays, like sliding shelves, and the nuts and bolts in one layer deep on the trays. It allows you to look through the jumble easier than digging through deeper containers.
