Thanks for the additional tips. There were no missing or loose pieces of the hinge holders.

I'm still a bit puzzled as to why the flap-flipping axle is not restrained from sliding back and forth (right to left) because this allowed one of the flaps to drag against the inside of its vent, wearing a groove into it and eventually getting a tip hung up in the gap in the plastic where fore and aft parts snap together, causing the control cable to bend into a "u" behind the lever panel.

I'll be pulling the dash and working on the heater box and other bits and am gonna see what can be done to restrain the axle's side-to-side freedom.

One thing that surprised me was that there does not seem to be any dash disassembly info in Bentleys. I'd not have posted the question about the heater panel cover if there had been. All I found was on page 80.12 where it shows the heater cover plate is glued to the air distributor, a part that does not exist in my 1984 automatic transmission Westy.
