slave cylinder bolt ? if speaking vanagon .. the forward one with the bracket on it is easy. it's the aft one that's hard to get a small 13mm wrench on the bottom side in the tight space of the bracket, then turn the other side on the top.

but there is a nice fix for that. I do it on any transaxle, or slave bracket, fthat is removed fromt the van, or in my hands. I weld that little bolt in from below .. that way it's a stud, which is what the factory should have done.. and then .. it's so easy...... .you just unscrew the nut on top of the stud ..bingo, slave comes right off.

the primary conderns in production and design are .. price and content. how many goodies they get on the vehilce for the price .. making the easy to work on .. I'll have to say it DOES look like they thought about that some .. but not in every last detail.

As cars go though .. I would not be into vanagons almost exclusiely if the did not have that one big factor.. overall ...they are very sweet and straightforward to work on.

I also like what Paul Guzak said about how the waterpump got to be so hard to replace on a waterboxer engine with engine in the van .. the factory gave the engineers just 30 days to come up with a water-cooled version of their air-cooled opposed four engine. That fits all right. and it is truely a converted air-cooled design .. most obviously at the heads and head gaskets. ( a 2.2 liter inline four cast iron block and maybe balancaing shafts would have been SO right ! ...but then we wouldn't all know each other since they'd be such robust reliable engines ..at least this way, with the various weeknesses of waterboxer engines we all get to know and help each other . )

but at least it's a 'real' van engine ....( the waterboxer ) and not a car ( jetta/rabbit etc ) engine pushing a van. what fun.
