hi Phil. I don't find that to be a factor really. Mostly..........once I get them running regularly with good clean oil in them .. hyd lifter clatter rarely happens.

what will cause lifter clatter is .. just old and gummed up. and this one .. very short periods of operation .. like start up the van, move it 100 feet, shut it off.

do that 3 times and sometimes that will make them clatter for a while.

in all cases, regardless of oil type .. if they tend to clatter...add a hyd lifter cleaner additive .. CD-2 is one brand. Get it at a FLAPS. there are always few to choose from.

I personally would not make that generalization about non-synthetic versus synthetic oil and hyd lifters.. or 'maybe sometimes sorta' at the most. .

I've had lifters take months to get and stay consistently quiet on an old gummed up engine.

there is an adjustment too, but normally you never mess with that. in rare cases ....the rocker arms or push rods get messed up , bent, worn etc. but that's pretty rare.

for really persistent hyd lifter noise I'd check rocker arms, push rods and adjustments.

it is possibly to replace a lifter that is genuinely damaged without removing the head.

99.99 % of the time .. it's just a matter of getting them clean again.
