I am aware that they are able to be calibrated, and what it takes to do so.
But, I don't know of a good way to do it. There is no adjustment screw on
the back;
it's done by moving the drive magnet in relation to the steel speed cup,
adding or removing magnetism, and/or adjusting the return spring.
None of this is easy, simple or without danger of ruining things.
I've read about the higher costs from other folks who've
had it done. I don't know of any shops around me that do this, and have no
experience using them.
I could just advance the needle 3MPH above the current setpoint and try it
out.

fwiw,
I just had a vanagon speedometer in an instrument shop for odometer repair
and calibration ..
cost about $ 100, not 300 to 500.
such a price would be way high..
125 to 160ish is about right for rebuilding one of these speedometers.
I sorta thought there might be a screw on the back of a vanagon speedometer
for calibration ...and I just looked an 85mph speedo out of an 84 vanagon
....didn't see any adjustment there, but they are calibratable.
it's normal for them to read a bit high of course.
