I've hyped this before, but go to the Virginia side of the Potomac and stand there at their lookout park and gawk at Great Falls. There might be kayakers surfing the waves and maybe even some running the falls too, but the single most impressive part of the lookout is the notches in the pavillion showing where the various record floods got to over the decades. You're a long ways away from the river at normal flows and those benchmarks are pretty impressive.
