Incidentally, if you pull your instrument cluster to send off the a vendor for repair or just to let it languish on your bench until you get around to working on it, the van will run fine without it.  At least my '87 does.  Running without guages, make sure to check all fluids periodically since you won't have warning if something goes amiss.

Another sign of how lucky we are with our vendors.  The problem isn't a Vanagon problem--it is a VDO problem.  The same happens on Porsche speedos.  Cost of repair is somewhat higher....
