While you are wrestling with valve problems, "a knock in the engine near cylinder #2" makes me cringe!! There are two sounds generally associated with internal engine faults. One is a clack or rattle sound associated with the valve train - and most times being related to a lifter being pumped up. There other causes of valve train noises, but that's the most common one. The other sound "IN" the engine is a "knock". That is a very distinctive sound, and usually signifies imminent bearing failure - either a rod or main bearing. There are stethescope like tools that can beused to listen deep into the engine and help isolate these sounds and give you a clearer picture of what is happening and where. Get them at the local FLAPS. You can also use the a socket extension for a ratchet wrench with one end placed on against the engine, and lean your head over so the other end is on your jawbone just below the ear.
