Thanks for the CMOS and headlight relay suggestion Larry.

For now the stock bulbs for my newer E4 headlights are pretty bright (haven't measured volts present though) but doing the work while in there is not much more effort.

Not to get too far off base here but, can the CMOS you point to be used to make a timed delay for an interior light?

Seems the Mk3 light *might* fit: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4906051-Upgrade-stock-interior-dome-light-to-time-delay-Mk3-dome-light and would be much easier. ;) I think Alistair Bell has posted of this, or a similar one but thinking it might not be too hard to build the circuit.
