I made that mistake. Left that bleeder screw right out and drove around one day. Couldn't figure why the van was getting hot till I stopped to check the fluid level. Added some coolant then went round to bleed the rad (with my handy-dandy bleeder hole funnel set-up) and found the screw, right where I'd left it the day before...on a resting spot near the radiator. Re-installed and all was good again.

(disclaimer: My engine is an inline four vw and my coolant level sender/blinking dash light is inoperative. My temp gauge works fine and looking at the overflow/expansion tank, by eye, worked too, after I saw the gauge climbing and stopped to look.)
