BTDT but in my case it was the brushes in the alternator.  And I didn't
catch it before I died in the middle of a freeway.  I did have a clue that
didn't register, the gas gage falling much faster than it should have but it
didn't register in my feeble mind.  So lesson learned:  First, watch those
warning lights when they test themselves at startup (I'm sure we all do,
every time we turn the key :) ) and Second, the alternator warning light
doesn't warn you under certain types of failures.
BTW, good catch Angus.  I just hope I'm as alert as you were nest time I
have the same kind of problem.
